Click here to read about the experiences of some of the women drivers who have attended the Women in the Winner's Circle Driver Development Academy.

Established in 1994 through the Women in the Winner’s Circle Foundation, the Complete Driver Academy is the most comprehensive educational and training program of its kind for talented women race drivers who aspire to the professional levels of motorsports.

The Academy has a two-fold purpose:

  1. identify potential champion women drivers who have demonstrated success on the track and have a desire to pursue a career in professional motorsports; and

  2. create an experience that will provide the tools to further women drivers’ careers in motorsports as well as enhance their lives on and off the track.

In 2008, the Foundation moved this ground breaking program to the next level by expanding from a four-day experience to a full year commitment including three onsite weekends. This redesign creates the opportunity for participants to apply the knowledge they gain during the individual sessions, and draw on the knowledge of and support from Foundation staff throughout the Academy year. This new format also provides a level of accountability for completing each Session through specific assignments and deliverables that must be completed.

The Academy is comprised of three invitation-only weekend sessions with interim assignments, which participants are expected to complete.

Session One: Physical and Mental Preparation
This session is focused on the physical and mental preparation that is required of a champion driver. Drivers will experience a physical workout and learn how to develop an effective fitness plan. They will undergo physical testing to create a baseline for improvement. The group will gain knowledge in preparing the mind for competition and will receive MindShaper™ Software to be used as a tool in improving mental skills such as focus, concentration, and reaction time.

Session Two: Business Seminars and Media Training
Participants will receive training in various aspects of working with the media, including being interviewed, writing press releases, and making speeches. This session will also include seminars on “The Business of Racing” and “The Brand YOU” including topics on sponsorship and financial planning. The prerequisite for Session Two is completion of Session One and an invitation from Lyn St. James.

Session Three: On Track and Technical
This session will include time on-track and focusing on the technical aspects of the sport. Drivers will gain seat time in a variety of vehicles and be able to demonstrate skills learned in the mental prep part of Session One. Academy staff will have an opportunity to observe the participants skill and demeanor in a track situation. The prerequisite for Session Three is completion of Sessions One and Two, and an invitation from Lyn St. James.
