Education.
The Women in the Winners Circle Foundation’s
“Checkered Flag for Learning” program uses motorsports as the
catalyst to motivate students (primarily, but not limited to, middle school) to
learn in the areas of science, math and life skills.
“If you get the children excited about something like motorsports – and then
show them how science, math and even reading, applies to that field – then you
can actually get them excited about learning,” Lyn says. “You just have to show
them how their academic studies apply to real life. They’ll take it from there.”
During 2002–2003, the Foundation supported a variety of “Checkered Flag for
Learning” activities:
• In April 2002, Lyn spoke to students at
Howe Middle School
on Career Day, in her
ongoing work with the Indianapolis Public
Schools system.
• In April 2002, Lyn organized a training day for
Kettering
University students
at Whiteland Raceway, in preparation for
their competition in the
National Formula SAE Motorsports
competition.
• In September 2002, Michelle Marguis represented
the
Foundation at the
Sally Ride Festival at the
University of
Michigan.
• In April 2003, the Foundation, in collaboration
with ID Solutions
of Indianapolis, presented a
distance learning program, Racing
101, to two high school
classes.
• On June 19, 2003, Lyn was a celebrity guest at
the annual
National Mentoring Partnership Awards
dinner in New York.
Other celebrities included
Michael Bolton, Tom Cruise, Paul
Newman, Jon Stewart and Joanne
Woodward.
• In 2002-2003, the Foundation provided support
to three
female high school juniors to
attend the Kettering University
LITE Program.
